Up close and Personal with Chief Officer Kristel Manimtim

“I have learned how to look at every challenge as a learning opportunity. As the saying goes, “We cannot direct the wind but we can always adjust our sails so it could take us where we want to go.”

The desire to learn more has served Chief Officer Kristel Manimtim well in achieving success. Let us look back at his 12-year journey as a TSM seafarer.

How did you learn about TSM?
- I was about to give up on my dreams when my brother asked me to apply with Thome. After passing the required examinations and interviews, I joined the second batch of the company’s global cadetship program.

How long have you been with TSM?
- I have been sailing with Thome since 2007. From being one of their cadets to Chief Officer, I am now looking forward to my promotion as Master.

Were there any challenges that you encountered when you were just starting to establish a career in the maritime industry?

- Maintaining the balance between the need of your crew and the standards of the company/vessel. If you care too much for your crew, you might end up spoiling them - leading to poor performance and loss of control. Likewise, if you care too much for the company standards, you might end up disregarding the rights and welfare of your crew. Developing a growth mindset has taught me how to deal with this challenge.

What are your greatest learnings for the past years that you have been working with TSM?

- I have learned how to look at every challenge as a learning opportunity. As the saying goes, “We cannot direct the wind but we can always adjust our sails so it could take us where we want to go.”
